The Apparent Alarcon Exception?

Accountability, Confidence, Conflict, Integrity

In Los Angeles, City Council members must reside in the District in which they run for election to the City Council.  Not illogical.  Easy enough to understand and follow.

Sitting Los Angeles City Council member Richard Alarcon, and his wife, have juat been criminally indicted for allegedly lying about where they live.  Of course, it would be too refreshing to think they might just fess up, plead guilty and take their lumps.  And save “we the people” from having to pay for their prosecution, if not Mr. Alarcon’s defense to boot!

We’ve all heard of “Have you seen my glasses?” Or “Geez, where are my car keys [or my cell phone]?” But “Hmm, what town is our home in?” Gimme a break!

Not the first time this has come up in sunny Southern California.  Just a couple of years ago,  Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke was accused of the same “confusion” about where she and her husband lived, or where their home was.  She was given a free pass because she was about to retire, after a long career of public service.

Can you imagine, “Honey, I’m home.” “Well, hello there, good lookin’, and who are you?” Maybe we now have a new defense for adultery?  Maybe if Ms. Burke wasn’t given a free pass, Mr. Alarcon wouldn’t have forgotten where he left his house.  Must be something in the California water.

Wanna know what’s really scary?  Mr. Alarcon’s supporters are defending him because they feel he has done a good job as a member of the City Council!  Maybe he ought to go out and rob a bank!  Just assert the “Alarcon Good Service Exception” defense.  Or the “When I was a Boy Scout, I Helped A Little Old Lady Cross The Street” defense.

Maybe this is why so many of our politicians are…confused.  Before they were politicians, they were already…confused.

Must be something in that California water.
